JoJo Siwa Reflects on Identifying as a Lesbian Before Chris Hughes Romance

JoJo Siwa is opening up about one of the most talked-about chapters of her personal life. The former child star explained why she once identified as a lesbian before falling for boyfriend Chris Hughes, saying outside pressure shaped how she described her sexuality.

The candid comments arrive as JoJo Siwa and Chris Hughes continue attracting attention for their relationship. Fans have closely followed the couple since they met on Celebrity Big Brother UK.

JoJo Siwa explained why she identified as a lesbian before dating Chris Hughes

During a backstage TikTok with Dancing With the Stars pro Ezra Sosa, Ezra joked that he thought Siwa “was lesbian, but is clearly not anymore.” JoJo quickly replied, “She was, by the way,” according to E! News.

The conversation echoed comments Siwa has shared before about how she viewed her identity. After coming out in 2021, she often described herself as gay instead of using the label lesbian. In a 2022 TikTok, she explained, “I don’t hate the word ‘lesbian,’ I just… whenever someone talks to me about my sexuality, I just say that I’m gay.” She added, “It’s not the word that flows off the tongue for me if that makes sense,” according to the outlet.

Siwa later told the Daily Mail that she felt pressure to adopt the label. “I did that because of the pressure,” she said. “You just get put in this world where you feel like, because you now have said, ‘Oh, I’m a lesbian,’ you have to be a lesbian.”

Her relationship with Chris Hughes changed that perspective. Speaking to E! News last year, Siwa called “queer” the term that fits her best. “Queer is an umbrella of, ‘Look, I’m just me,’” she explained. “The most beautiful thing about the LGBTQIA community is love is love.”

The romance also sparked intense public debate. Siwa previously admitted that dating Hughes brought even more attention than coming out. During an appearance on Hot Goss, she said, “Coming out dating a man, for me, ended up getting more scrutiny than coming out dating a girl.”

For JoJo, the message seems simple. She wants the freedom to define herself on her own terms instead of fitting into someone else’s expectations.
