A recent analysis was conducted by the National Park Service on Donald Trump‘s 250-foot arch. The study stated that it could compromise the coherence between several historic institutions, including the Lincoln Memorial.
The NPS report highlighted that most monuments, buildings, and sites in Washington have been planned to share the same line of sight as a symbolic gesture of the country’s rich past. However, the monument would reportedly stand within the Memorial Avenue Corridor cultural landscape. This position now threatens to alter the “character-defining visual and spatial relationships” between the historical places, as per AP News.
Due to its proposed location, the arch would disrupt the alignment between the Lincoln Memorial, Memorial Bridge, and Arlington House. “The bridge alignment and associated ceremonial landscape were intended to physically and symbolically unite North and South through a coordinated monumental composition extending across the Potomac River,” the report noted.
Other structures sharing a similar fate include the National Mall, the US Capitol, and Lady Bird Johnson Park.
White House spokesman Davis Ingle responded to the debate surrounding the design of Donald Trump’s proposed monument. He noted, “The Triumphal Arch in Memorial Circle is going to be one of the most iconic landmarks not only in Washington, DC, but throughout the world. It will enhance the visitor experience at Arlington National Cemetery for veterans, the families of the fallen, and all Americans alike, serving as a visual reminder of the noble sacrifices borne by so many American heroes throughout our 250-year history so we can enjoy our freedoms today.”
A legal action has since been filed against the arch by three veterans and a historian, challenging its construction.
