JD Vance went after MAGA ally Marc Thiessen in an unprovoked online swipe. The jab followed a Washington Post op-ed Thiessen wrote about him last week.
A debate about grocery prices took a strange turn when the vice president jumped in with a personal shot at a fellow conservative. The real reason for the swipe appears to have nothing to do with food.
JD Vance’s comments about Marc Thiessen sparked debate among political commentators
Vice President JD Vance implied that a top MAGA ally was fat in an unprovoked online attack. Specifically, he aimed the jab at conservative fixture Marc Thiessen. Notably, the tweet he replied to never mentioned Vance at all.
The exchange started elsewhere. First, right-wing commentator Matt Walsh said high grocery prices were becoming a vulnerability for President Donald Trump. Then Turning Point USA personality Andrew Kolvet offered anecdotal evidence on the affordability crisis. He drew on a college student’s observation about burrito prices.
“One of our TPUSA college students gave me his take on affordability: ‘A burrito shouldn’t cost $20,'” Kolvet posted, along with a complaint about Biden-era COVID-19 policies.
In response, Thiessen argued college students already have access to meals through their campus meal plans. Moreover, he argued college students should not spend their money going out for a casual meal. “Cry me a river. The burritos in the college cafeteria are included in your meal plan,” he complained.
JD Vance then inserted himself into the MAGA burrito debate. Furthermore, he took aim at Thiessen’s apparent eating habits. “I’m surprised to hear Mark say this. If you’ve ever met him in person, it’s quite obvious the man has never missed a burrito,” Vance posted, misspelling Thiessen’s first name. Afterward, the Trump campaign account amplified the weight jab and called the tweet a “banger.”
However, the JD Vance and Marc Thiessen feud does not appear to be about burritos at all. Rather, it looks like retaliation for a swipe Thiessen took at Vance last week.
In a Washington Post op-ed, Marc Thiessen argued that Vance is actively undermining his boss’s position on Iran. For context, the vice president has long opposed U.S. military intervention in the Middle East. “Vance continues to publicly contradict the president’s positions,” he wrote, adding, “Perhaps it’s time for the president to take the advice of those who have delivered him success in Iran—not those like Vance who have failed him.”
Meanwhile, weight has been a recurring theme in Trump’s orbit. For instance, Trump routinely mentions his “highly neurotic” and “seriously overweight” friend who he says takes “the fat shot.” Similarly, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has declared war on “fat troops” and “fat generals and admirals,” calling them unacceptable.
