Michelle Obama’s birthday post for Barack Obama did not land well with everyone. Critics say her public comments about him usually sound very different.
A tender anniversary of sorts turned sour in the replies, where users pulled up years of past remarks and asked an uncomfortable question.
Critics questioned Michelle’s affectionate post, saying she usually speaks differently about Barack in public
Michelle Obama marked her husband’s 65th birthday with a public show of affection, and plenty of people online refused to take it at face value. Her tribute arrived after years of blunt comments about their marriage that fueled divorce speculation, according to RadarOnline.
The 62-year-old posted a photo on Instagram showing the two of them close together. She leaned into his shoulder, held his hand and looked over at him.
“Happy birthday, @BarackObama! 65 never looked better. Every day, you make me a better person, and I’m thankful for all the ways you show up for our family and our country. Love you,” she gushed in the caption.
Her husband replied under the post. “Love you, Miche! Thanks everybody for all the birthday wishes,” he wrote.
Supporters flooded the thread with praise for the former president and said they missed having him in office. Others could not square the warmth with how she normally talks about him.
“I’m shocked by the kind words you have for him. All I hear from you is complaints about him,” one user on X wrote. “You’re usually bashing him,” a second person snarked with a series of laughing emojis. A third asked, “You don’t tell him that in person?”
The Michelle Obama critics had material to draw on. Back in 2022, she said, “There were 10 years where I couldn’t stand my husband.” She argued that “Marriage isn’t 50/50, ever, ever,” and described choosing to stay through the rough stretches while she searched for balance.
Moreover, she had little patience for couples who walk away early. “There are times I’m 70, he’s 30. There are times he’s 60, 40, but guess what? 10 years – we’ve been married 30. I would take 10 bad years over 30 — it’s just how you look at it. And people give up… ‘Five years; I can’t take it,'” she said.
The rumor mill spun harder in January 2025, when she stayed away from two major Washington events. She was absent from Jimmy Carter’s funeral and Donald Trump’s inauguration, unlike the wives of every other living president.
She later pushed back on the assumptions. “People couldn’t even imagine that I was making a choice for myself. They automatically assumed my husband and I were divorcing,” she said on Sophia Bush’s Work in Progress podcast in April 2025.
Barack Obama treated the whole thing as a punchline on her IMO podcast in July 2025. “She took me back! It was touch and go for a while,” he shared.
