Dr. Jill Biden once believed the United States was on the verge of making history. Now, the former first lady says she no longer expects to see a woman elected president during her lifetime. Her candid remarks came during a recent podcast interview, where she reflected on the last presidential election and why her outlook has changed.

People reported that during an appearance on SiriusXM’s Let’s Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa. Ripa asked Biden whether she believed the country would elect a woman president in their lifetime. “In my lifetime. I’m 75,” Biden replied. “I feel like probably not in my lifetime, Kelly, but maybe in yours.”
The former first lady said she genuinely believed Vice President Kamala Harris would become the nation’s first female president during the last election cycle. “I really did think last time that Kamala was gonna win,” Biden said. She continued, “I was out on the campaign trail for her, I saw the excitement, I saw the crowds, I saw it at the convention.”
She added that the energy surrounding Harris made her think the country had reached a turning point. “I thought, ‘Finally, we’re going to have a woman president,'” Biden said. “And I must tell you, I was shocked… the morning after… I found out that she had lost. Shocked.”
Biden’s comments come as several prominent Democratic women continue to generate speculation about future presidential campaigns. Harris remains one of the names frequently mentioned as a potential 2028 candidate, although she has not officially launched a campaign.
Other Democrats, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, have also appeared in early conversations about the party’s future leadership.
Biden has largely stayed out of the political spotlight since leaving the White House with Joe Biden. However, she occasionally shares her perspective on major political moments and the issues that remain important to her.
Her latest comments offered a personal reflection rather than a political endorsement. Still, they underscored her disappointment after campaigning for Harris and believing the country was ready to elect its first female president.
