Kate Beckinsale Speaks Out After Scrubbing Her Instagram

Kate Beckinsale has wiped her Instagram feed clean after a difficult stretch online. The actress returned to Stories with a pointed response to the commentary surrounding her appearance. Her message went beyond one rude remark. Beckinsale explained why the speculation has become especially painful and signaled that her future on the platform may look very different.

People reported on Aug. 8 that Beckinsale deleted all posts from her Instagram grid before sharing a series of Stories highlighting body-shaming comments she had received. She responded to one particularly harsh message by writing, “I think people might be broken.”

The actress also addressed the speculation surrounding her weight loss. Beckinsale said grief has taken a physical toll after the death of her mother, Judy Loe, in 2025 and her stepfather, Roy Battersby, in 2024. She said losing several family members in a short period had affected her body and pushed back against strangers making assumptions about her health.

Beckinsale also discussed mast cell activation syndrome, or MCAS, saying she was diagnosed 16 years ago. She explained that the condition can affect her stomach and that flare-ups can bring severe acid reflux. Cleveland Clinic describes MCAS as a rare condition involving repeated episodes caused by overactive mast cells.

The Underworld star said she initially hoped speaking publicly about MCAS could help raise awareness. But after receiving more criticism about her voice and appearance, she expressed regret over making the video.

When one person asked whether she would like to gain weight, Beckinsale answered, “Yes, very much.” Her response pushed back against the assumption that her slimmer appearance was necessarily intentional.

She also appeared to explain why she had cleared her account. Responding to another hostile comment, Beckinsale wrote, “I’ll delete everything except for the books I recommend.”

Beckinsale is hardly the only celebrity challenging unsolicited commentary about appearance. Brandy recently urged people to look beyond appearances after weight-loss speculation, while Kelly Osbourne spoke about the cruelty of body-shaming remarks during a difficult period in her own life.

For Beckinsale, the latest exchange was less about defending a particular number on a scale than drawing a boundary. Her comments emphasized that strangers do not know the grief, health concerns or personal circumstances behind someone else’s appearance.
