Dwayne Johnson reveals Willie Nelson gave him a rare guitar as a birthday gift
During an interview with Rolling Stone, Dwayne Johnson revealed details about the gift he received from Nelson. While discussing his music journey following the release of his song “Your Dad” from Moana: Voices Across the Ocean, Johnson opened up about Nelson’s influence on his passion for music.
Johnson said, “I always like to say I sing from the heart — and I sing in keys that don’t exist. So it’s a good combo.” He also shared that he grew up around singing and dancing with his Polynesian family.
While talking about his music inspiration, Johnson said, “At a very early age, my deep influences were Sam Cooke, Elvis, George Jones, Merle Haggard, even Johnny Paycheck. Guys like that who just were on top of their genres, and also Willie Nelson, who, as a matter of fact, gave me my first guitar.”
The actor recalled that the guitar was a special and rare instrument. He said, “You know the Trigger guitar he has? The historic one? I guess Martin only made 100 of those, and as a birthday gift, ’cause I was such a huge fan, he gave me one of those. I mean, I play like dog s— compared to him, but it’s still a cool gift. Anyway, that’s my musical start.”
When asked about his next move in music, he shared that he might explore the “old-school soul genre” with a “country flavor.”
“Your Dad” on the album is written and performed by Dwayne Johnson and co-written by Iam Tongi. He earlier performed the “Can I Get a Chee Hoo?” song for Moana 2.
