A new book claims that a request from King Charles left Prince William “fuming.” The monarch reportedly asked Kate Middleton to change her name, a proposal that allegedly sparked unease within the Royal Family. A new account of the Royal family claims that Prince William was left “fuming” after King Charles and Queen Camilla asked Kate Middleton to change the spelling of her first name when she entered royal life.
In his biography titled Kate! The Courage, Grace, and Power of the Woman Who Will Be Queen, Christopher Andersen claimed that King Charles and Queen Camilla were concerned about Kate Middleton having a royal cypher featuring another “C.”
He wrote, “Charles and Camilla each had a royal monogram that consisted of interlocking C’s beneath a crown, and they expressed concern that a third royal cypher with a C was overkill.”
Andersen further claimed that the couple questioned whether Kate would be willing to alter the spelling of her first name. He wrote, “Would Kate mind if she changed the spelling of her full name from ‘Catherine’ to ‘Katherine.’”
The reported request allegedly left Prince William “fuming.” Andersen wrote, “Offended by yet another command from on high essentially aimed at placating Camilla, a fuming William replied on his wife’s behalf. The request was nothing less than ‘insulting,’ he told his father, not only to Kate but to her entire family.”
“The entire nature of Charles and Camilla’s request—that Catherine was adding too many C’s to the royal crests—shows just how much image and branding means to members of the royal family. The monarchy really is a giant game of one-upmanship,” Andersen shared with Fox News Digital. “William has gone to war for Kate,” he further stated.
The author also mentioned that the royal pair expected her to accept it, given her reputation as a cooperative team player. What they failed to recognize was her strong preference for Catherine, the name her parents gave her.
Andersen added that Kate Middleton held then-Prince Charles in genuine regard and did not personally blame him for the reported request.
According to the author, the princess believed the unusual idea had originated elsewhere and therefore held no ill will toward Charles. Meanwhile, a Kensington Palace spokesperson told Fox News Digital that the palace does not comment on books.
