Ed Harris reportedly ruffled feathers on the Dutton Ranch set after publicly criticizing his role. The actor had called his character “inconsequential,” but insiders claimed Taylor Sheridan still planned to give him more screen time.
Harris’ complaints came as other cast members reportedly raised concerns about filming conditions and creative control.
Taylor Sheridan will reportedly expand Ed Harris’ ‘Dutton Ranch’ role despite the actor’s complaints
Harris played veterinarian Everett McKinney on the Yellowstone spinoff. He reportedly became frustrated after realizing his character had less importance than producers initially promised.
Speaking with Variety, Harris said he felt “a little bit misled” about the role. He claimed producers had presented him as one of four main characters before filming began.
Harris also said he told his agent to “get me the f*** out of here” during production. He became especially angry after a scene featuring him singing at a bar landed on the cutting-room floor.
“I felt a little bit misled,” Harris said, explaining that producers had discussed his character extensively beforehand.
The actor also said the experience left him feeling “inconsequential.” He reportedly considered voiding his contract after the promised scene disappeared.
An insider told the Daily Mail that Sheridan remained unhappy about Harris’ public complaints. However, the source claimed Sheridan planned to honor his original promise and expand Everett’s role.
“Ed Harris will remain on the show and his role will get even bigger,” the insider claimed. “He is getting more time even though he pissed Taylor Sheridan off with his comments.”
The source also described Harris as “prickly” and claimed the actor had “a really big ego.” Still, the insider acknowledged that Harris remained “great on screen.”
Harris was not the only cast member who reportedly struggled during production. Cole Hauser previously described Sheridan’s limited presence during Season 1 as “a challenge.”
Hauser also complained about North Texas heat while maintaining Rip Wheeler’s physique. He said temperatures made it difficult to keep the weight he usually gained for the role.
Season 2 was expected to bring Sheridan closer to the production. The creator reportedly planned to spend more time in the writers’ room and on set. The next season was also expected to focus on Beth and Rip finding their son Carter after his kidnapping.
Despite the behind-the-scenes tension, Harris remained attached to the series for Season 2.
