Chris Brown Has a Message for Lionel Richie After ‘Jail’ Comment

Chris Brown had a cheeky response ready after Lionel Richie took a swipe at his legal history while discussing Brown’s stadium tour with Usher. Rather than fire back seriously, the R&B singer poked fun at the 77-year-old music legend’s age and let a few laughing emojis handle the rest.

Richie had compared the younger stars’ massive 2026 tour to the shows he played alongside Earth, Wind & Fire decades earlier. But his trip down memory lane came with one particularly sharp punchline about staying out of jail.

Chris Brown responded to Lionel Richie’s criticism of his tour with Usher by poking fun at Richie’s age

During a stop on his Sing a Song All Night Long Tour, Richie told the crowd, “Usher and Chris Brown… See, they try to do something new.” He then joked, “The Commodores with Earth, Wind & Fire, we were doing that back 40 years ago! Only difference is, between then and now, we didn’t go to jail.”

Brown soon spotted a clip of the Lionel Richie roast on Instagram and delivered his own generational jab. “damn unk. We love ya paw paw,” he commented alongside four laughing emojis.

The jail joke appeared to reference Brown’s lengthy legal history. In 2009, he pleaded guilty to felony assault after attacking his then-girlfriend Rihanna.

More recently, Brown pleaded guilty in July in connection with a 2023 altercation at a London nightclub. He is scheduled to be sentenced in the U.K. on Oct. 26.

The Chris Brown response arrived while both singers had major tours underway. Brown and Usher kicked off The R&B Tour in June, with the co-headlining stadium run scheduled through December.

Their itinerary included major venues such as Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara and SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. Brown appeared content to let the size of the Chris Brown Usher tour speak for itself after Richie’s dig.

Richie, meanwhile, had joined Earth, Wind & Fire for another run of their Sing a Song All Night Long Tour. The pairing brought together his extensive pop and R&B catalog with the group’s funk and soul classics.

Despite Richie going straight for Brown’s rap sheet, Brown’s “paw paw” comeback kept their exchange firmly in roast territory rather than turning it into an R&B feud.
