Redmond O’Neal appeared in a Los Angeles courtroom on Thursday, Aug. 13, for an arraignment on an attempted murder charge. His godmother, Mela Murphy, was there for it.
She told Us Weekly afterward that she felt more hopeful than ever about his future. Murphy is godmother to the son of the late Farrah Fawcett and Ryan O’Neal, and she brings a fresh change of clothes to each of his court hearings.

Murphy spoke to Us Weekly once the hearing ended. “He’s working the program and they are working with him. They are doing good work with him,” she said of his treatment.
Redmond reached the courtroom around 11:30 a.m. PT because his transport van arrived late, and he blew Murphy a kiss on his way in. She pointed to that moment as a sign of how he is improving under psychiatric care. “You saw him just now throwing me a kiss. He is always calling to make sure I am alright,” she said.
Redmond spoke only briefly during the hearing. He confirmed to a judge that he understood the arraignment would continue until Oct. 29.
His lawyer, Dana Cole, confirmed he would not make a bail motion that day. Redmond then received an order to stay at Patton State Hospital without bail and without prejudice. A judge also ruled he had to remain in his prison jumpsuit for the arraignment, though he had been able to change out of his prison clothes for an earlier preliminary hearing.
Murphy wants that allowance back at a future date. “He feels better. It’s the feel of the clothes,” she said on Thursday. “Feeling like he has a little life besides what life he is living. It just feels right and it makes him feel better in court, more respectful… human.”
Asked how Redmond has fared with his psychological care at Patton, Murphy said he is getting the best support possible “with all the new treatments now that are out for neurodivergence.” She also suggested his late mother would feel thrilled about the progress he has made after numerous run-ins with the law. “I just close my eyes and visualize her there,” she said of Fawcett.
Redmond’s legal troubles date to May 2018, when officers in Los Angeles arrested him on attempted murder and assault charges following an attempted robbery. Local police charged the 41-year-old after a string of attacks severely injured five people, and a press release described one victim’s injuries as “significant and serious stab wounds and cuts to his face, neck and upper body.”
He had pleaded not guilty at the LAX Airport courthouse to second-degree robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a smoking device, possession of an injection or ingestion device and two counts of possessing a controlled substance.
