With Donald Trump suggesting he will soon take over the Strait of Hormuz, Iran has shared a list of demands that the US needs to fulfill in order to ensure the reopening of the significant waterway. During a recent press conference, the Middle Eastern nation stated that it has no intention of allowing the strait to return to its normal state unless the US agrees to the terms the two nations have already agreed upon.
Iran shares list of demands amid Donald Trump’s latest comments
On August 18, Iran’s parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf revealed the steps that Donald Trump and the US need to follow for them to once again open the Strait of Hormuz.
Speaking in Persian, Ghalibaf announced, “Let me make it clear. Until America implements its commitments under the memorandum of understanding, including lifting the blockade on the release of frozen assets, lifting the oil sanctions, ending threats and military operations on all fronts, and other conditions that America has agreed to under the understanding, the Strait will not be reopened,” as per CNN.
Notably, the unspecified but agreed terms referred to by Ghalibaf alluded to the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that the two countries settled upon in June. The agreement also included the proposition for a ‘final deal’ that aimed to end the war within 60 days. However, the deadline ended up expiring earlier this week.
Iran’s clarification regarding the Strait of Hormuz comes after US President Donald Trump went back on his own word about having conducted or scheduled talks with the Middle Eastern nation. A while ago, the POTUS claimed that his officials had found a back channel with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to negotiate an agreement. However, Trump, as well as Iran, has since denied that any talks were taking place.
