Hayden Panettiere had been working with PETA on a campaign before her death. The project opposed keeping dolphins and whales in marine parks. PETA released the campaign posthumously as a tribute to her animal advocacy.
Hayden Panettiere worked with PETA on a campaign opposing dolphin and whale captivity.
Panettiere worked with PETA on the campaign before her death at 36. The project focused on ending dolphin and whale captivity in marine parks. PETA said the campaign honored her lifelong dedication to marine animals.
For the campaign, Panettiere was photographed inside a tiny bathtub. The image highlighted the cramped conditions dolphins and whales experience in captivity. The campaign asked viewers, “Could you live in a bathtub?”
The campaign also carried a direct message against marine parks. It urged the public to “Say no to marine parks. End cruel captivity.” PETA also released a video featuring Panettiere discussing the campaign.
In the video, Panettiere explained the campaign’s central comparison. “Imagine spending your entire life in a bathtub,” she said. “That’s what it is like for dolphins and whales in tiny tanks and marine amusement parks.” “Can you imagine their frustration, their trauma, their depression?” Panettiere asked.
The campaign represented another chapter in Panettiere’s animal advocacy. She previously made headlines for confronting dolphin hunters in Japan. The actress was 18 when she participated in the 2007 protest.
Panettiere paddled through ocean waters while confronting hunters in Taiji. The incident later appeared in the award-winning documentary The Cove. The film examined dolphin-hunting practices in Japan.
PETA released the campaign as a posthumous tribute to Panettiere’s advocacy. Her family confirmed her death on August 16. She would have turned 37 on August 21.
Her father, Alan Panettiere, remembered her as an extraordinary presence. “She was an incredible light and a force of nature,” he said. He also described the love and joy brought to others.
The campaign now serves as a posthumous reminder of Panettiere’s commitment. Her work continued to draw attention to marine animal welfare. PETA’s release ensured her final advocacy project reached the public.
