The global star Sandra Bullock is finally sharing what she went through during the final years of Bryan Randall, the love of her life. The actress recently explained why she kept his ALS diagnosis private and how the decision affected her while she cared for him.
Sandra Bullock says Bryan Randall’s wishes shaped her decision to keep his illness private
The 62-year-old Oscar-winning actress opened up about Randall’s illness during an appearance on the SmartLess podcast. She said Randall wanted to keep his health struggles away from the public, and she respected his wishes.
“He asked me not to share,” she said. “I know why he asked me not to.”
While Bullock understood his decision, she admitted that keeping the news private also left her feeling isolated. At the time, she was caring for Randall while raising her two children during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Bullock initially told only her sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, about his condition. She later opened up to a few close friends, including Jennifer Aniston and Amanda Anka.
Looking back, Bullock said she had already started mourning Randall before his death.
“I think where he was in his journey, both physically and mentally, I started grieving Bryan four years before he passed,” she shared. “There was something that had shifted.”
She continued, “My person left a lot earlier than the body left. I don’t think I ever dealt with that until after he passed, because you’re just on this treadmill.”
Randall died on Aug. 5, 2023, at 57, after a three-year battle with ALS. His family confirmed at the time that he had chosen to keep his illness private.
Bullock first met Randall in 2015 when he photographed her son Louis’ birthday party. They began dating soon after and later became a couple publicly.
Randall helped Bullock raise Louis and her daughter Laila. Before his death, Bullock had described him as the love of her life.
Now, years later, Bullock is giving the public a rare look at the difficult period she kept private while honoring Randall’s final wishes.
