Tim Robbins has criticized the Democratic Party, saying it needs to do more to motivate voters. The Shawshank Redemption star said Democrats need to present better ideas and give people more reasons to support them.
Tim Robbins criticizes both parties while arguing Democrats need a better strategy to win voters
During his appearance on the SmartLess podcast, with Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett, the Oscar winner discussed his views on both political parties. The 67-year-old said, “I personally am not a happy guy with either [party].” And added, “I got to say, there got to be better ideas and better, you know, better motivation for people to vote for Democrats. They have to get their stuff together. They really do.”
He also voiced concern over the growing role of political anger in people’s everyday lives. “The idea that you can find your worth and purpose and virtue by hatred is this terrible, terrible idea,” he said. And further explained, “The idea that if the source of your hatred is a particular person you don’t know, it’s an even worse idea. You’re battling a concept or an idea or a philosophy. You’re not dealing with an individual.”
He pointed out that political anger is not limited to one side. The actor said, “I feel like there are too many people that wake up agitated about political figures… on either side, and it’s not a good way to start your day.” He then suggested that people replace political doomscrolling with healthier activities, such as yoga, exercise, or a bike ride.
The discussion also took Robbins back to Bob Roberts, his 1992 directorial debut. The film centers on a conservative political candidate who uses music and media to win over voters. Robbins remembered being asked if the film was about George H.W. Bush. He explained that the film also explored the larger question of why political change does not happen.
Robbins, who rose to fame in the 1984 film Toy Soldiers, has long been vocal about his political views. He has publicly backed Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders. He campaigned alongside Sanders in 2016, introducing him at a New Hampshire event.
