Concept art from Spider-Man: Brand New Day starring Tom Holland has drawn attention over possible AI-generated imagery. The artbook recently hit the market following the movie’s massive success.
One piece titled “Big City, Little Spider,” created by artist Scott McInnes, quickly sparked criticism over possible AI elements.
According to The Direct, the artwork featured distorted buildings and oddly shaped taxis. Some vehicles also appeared to face inconsistent directions.
The artwork reportedly contained other unusual details, including stairways and building elements that fans interpreted as possible AI glitches.
McInnes has previously worked with Marvel Studios on The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Guardians of the Galaxy.
This is not the first time Marvel has faced criticism over artificial intelligence. The studio previously drew backlash after Secret Invasion used an AI-generated opening sequence on Disney+.
Fans also raised concerns after the Russo Brothers discussed their approach to AI. They said, “We have to approach AI the same way we approach all technological innovations. It’s potentially a valuable tool, but it’s the kind of tool that artists always have to remain in control of, but there’s going to be some valuable role in the creative process and the filmmaking process.”
The Spider-Man: Brand New Day artbook costs nearly $50. The alleged use of AI has sparked criticism from fans who questioned why the artwork appeared to contain AI-generated elements. However, Marvel has not publicly addressed the issue.
