Saoirse Ronan wants to play a Bond villain, while her husband, Jack Lowden, is rumored to be in contention for 007. The actress recently revealed her interest in joining the franchise and said she wants to explore darker characters in future projects.

Ronan opened up about her Bond ambitions while speaking with Empire. The actress said she wanted to take on darker roles and made her interest in the franchise especially clear during the interview.
“I want to go dark,” Ronan told Empire. She then explained that she had already expressed interest in playing a Bond villain. “I said that I wanted to be a Bond villain and I’m dead serious,” she said.
Ronan also explained why the role appealed to her. She wanted to portray a young female villain with plenty of anger. In her view, that character could offer an interesting dramatic perspective while also allowing women and girls to see anger represented differently.
“I think it would be really interesting, having a young female villain,” Ronan said. She added that such a character could “take all that pent-up anger and direct it somewhere.” Ronan said she would “love to do more of that.”
Meanwhile, her latest role has already allowed her to explore darker territory. Ronan stars as teacher Maria in Bad Apples. The character eventually holds a disruptive pupil captive in her basement. Ronan said the character was not simply an “out-and-out psychopath.”
“The whole point, and the reason why the writing is so clever, is that it’s gone past being black and white,” she explained. Ronan also described Maria as “the nicest villain you could play.” The role could therefore offer a glimpse at her interest in morally complicated characters.
For now, Ronan’s interest remains firmly on the villain side. Her comments nevertheless offer a different possibility for the next Bond movie. Rather than playing the franchise’s hero, she wants to make things considerably darker.
