Sean Penn apparently once gave John Leguizamo some unexpected information about his then-wife Madonna. The revelation came while the actors worked together decades ago. Leguizamo recently revisited the surprising Sean Penn confession while discussing his long Hollywood career. The story also revealed an amusing connection to one of Madonna’s earliest music videos.
John Leguizamo recalls Sean Penn telling him that Madonna had a crush on him
During the Aug. 26 episode of Let’s Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa, John Leguizamo recalled working with Penn on Casualties of War.
“We were doing Casualties of War, and Sean told me that she had a crush on me,” Leguizamo said. The actor remembered responding, “What? Oh, wow. Word.”
There was one obvious complication. Penn and Madonna were still married at the time. Leguizamo also said he was “otherwise engaged,” so nothing came from the revelation.
Still, the story had an amusing backstory. Before becoming famous, Leguizamo appeared as a background performer in the Madonna “Borderline” music video.
He told Kelly Ripa that he had heard Madonna liked Latino men. Therefore, he hoped appearing in the video might give him a chance to meet her. It did not work out that way. Leguizamo said he ended up in the background and never actually met Madonna during the shoot.
Years later, things changed. Leguizamo eventually became friends with the pop icon and said she invited him to several dinners at her homes in London and Manhattan.
The actor even recalled sharing one intimate dinner with Madonna and Lenny Kravitz. He praised her food and remembered the impressive artwork inside her home.
Penn and Madonna married in 1985 before divorcing in January 1989. Their relationship has continued to attract attention decades later, including recent speculation surrounding Madonna’s music.
As Entertainment Weekly reported, Leguizamo and Madonna ultimately formed a friendship despite missing each other during his early “Borderline” appearance.
For Leguizamo, though, Penn was apparently the first person to tell him that Madonna had noticed him.
