The Royal family’s palace, Buckingham Palace, has been compelled to make a crucial security upgrade after receiving cyber threats from Russia. As per reports, authorities have given the go-ahead to significantly upgrade the Palace’s cybersecurity and IT systems. Officials from the King’s household have reportedly addressed the issue with “ageing” computer systems, acknowledging the need to update them.

The Royal Family’s palace, Buckingham Palace, is reportedly forced to undergo major security upgrades due to security threats from Russia. As per The I, this move comes at a time when tensions intensify between the UK and Russia. As per the outlet, the U.S. has warned that Russia could potentially launch a limited attack against NATO countries. The attack may even come sooner than previously expected (via Daily Express).
Interestingly, Russia previously launched a cyber attack on the Royal Family’s website. In October 2023, Russia managed to take the site offline for around an hour and a half. Hence, royal authorities have reportedly allocated a portion of the annual Sovereign Grant to updating cybersecurity at Buckingham Palace.
Treasury minister Dan Tomlinson said: “The new level of the grant will ensure that the Royal Household can continue to deal with property maintenance backlogs following some years of constrained funding during the pandemic. It will also allow the Royal Household to replace ageing systems to strengthen cybersecurity and to install energy-efficient heating systems.”
As per the outlet, the government has granted the royal family a $134.9 million annual Sovereign Grant funded by the taxpayer. Notably, last year it was worth $184.96 million.
Moreover, the “core element” of the grant will increase from $97.2 million in 2026 to $133.7 million in 2027, according to the report. This is because King Charles and Queen Camilla are actively pursuing royal engagements. The numbers are much greater than Queen Elizabeth’s final years of reign.
