Jane Fonda has shared a heartbreaking admission, revealing that she didn’t expect to live this long. In a new podcast episode, the 87-year-old revealed she did not think she would live past the age of 30.
Jane Fonda opened up about “drugs and loneliness”
“I didn’t think I’d live past 30,” Jane said on The Look podcast this week. “I was sure I was going to die.” Opening up to host Michelle Obama about the reason why, Jane added that her “youth was not especially happy.”
“I’m not addictive, but I thought I was going to die from drugs and loneliness,” she revealed, referencing the impact of her mother’s passing when she was just 12 years old. “So the fact that I’m almost 88 is astonishing to me.”
That being said, Jane confirmed she has no concerns about how she’s lived her life. “I wouldn’t go back for anything,” she went on. “I feel more centered, more whole, more complete. I’m very happy single.”
Later in the episode, the actor and activist shared her perspective on growing old, something she’s “never” been afraid of. “I think that old age is fantastic if it’s lived intentionally,” Jane said.
“I’m not afraid of dying,” she continued, before adding she’s only afraid of dying “with a lot of regrets.”
“I watched my dad die with a lot of regrets,” Jane recalled. “That was an important realization for me, because if you don’t want to die with regrets, then you have to live the last part of your life in such a way that there won’t be any regrets.”
This mentality, she said, is what has “guided” her for the last 30 years. “I’ve been living to not have regrets,” Jane explained.
