Lizzo’s weight-loss journey nearly ended before it even began. Over the weekend, the rapper opened up about how difficult it was to deal with her weight problem. In the fall of 2023, Lizzo was in a dark place, not just for that issue. She was implicated in a lawsuit filed against her by three of her former backup dancers in 2023.
With everything seemingly against her, she admits to being “deeply suicidal.” The toll it took on her mental health was that extreme. She says that because of her weight issues and the alleged scandals she was implicated in, she cut off all ties with her loved ones.
Lizzo says she was “severely depressed” before losing weight
Physically and emotionally, Lizzo went through a lot in 2023. On her Substack account on Sunday, the Juice singer confided just how much of a tailspin she was in back then. “I was severely depressed,” said Lizzo. At the time, she says she couldn’t trust anyone, and that is part of what led her to contemplate suicide. She says she blamed herself for all of her misfortunes.
Her weight loss goals, though, were more about feeling better on the inside than the outside. She said she’d been holding onto so much, including her father’s death, and many toxic relationships. Through her weight loss, she not only improved physically but also mentally.
In August a video resurfaced about her sharing her mental health struggles at a concert in LA. The musician has said that she got sick of her identity “being overshadowed by my fatness.”
She added that there’s nothing wrong with being fat, but that if a woman wants to change, she should be allowed to. Lizzo has said she was inspired to become a singer and rapper when hearing Lauryn Hill.
Lizzo’s determination saw her shed 16 percent of her body fat.
