Meghan Markle’s Spokesperson Speaks Out Against ‘Highly Defamatory’ Claims

Meghan Markle’s spokesperson has strongly shut down claims that the royal took a dress from a photoshoot without permission. It follows accusations that the Duchess of Sussex wrongly kept the green gown she wore in promotional material for her upcoming holiday episode of With Love, Meghan.

Meghan Markle did NOT take a dress from a photo shoot without permission

In case you missed it, when Meghan appeared in a Netflix promotion wearing a one-shoulder gown, fans recognised it as the same $1,695 Galvan Ushuaia dress from a Variety photo shoot she did in 2022. The resurfacing of the dress prompted critics to question whether Meghan had kept the gown without approval. Now her spokesperson has responded.

“The insinuation that any items were taken without the full knowledge and agreement of the on-set stylists or their respective teams is not only categorically false, but also highly defamatory,” the Duchess’ spokesperson told PEOPLE. “Any items kept were done so in total transparency and in accordance with contractual arrangements.”

Per protocol, members of the British Royal Family are not permitted to accept clothing for free. But an industry insider explained to PEOPLE it’s standard for talent to keep certain items from a set. This might be for security reasons, like preventing the resale or auction of the item – something which has happened to members of the Royal Family and other celebrities in the past.

Announcing her Netflix holiday special on Instagram, Meghan posted the promotional image earlier this month. In it, she can be seen lighting candles on a seasonal tablescape. “Embrace traditions and make new ones this holiday season,” she wrote in the caption. “With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration arrives December 3rd.”
