If you’re still watching Sister Wives, you’ve been following Kody Brown’s apology tour. Having already apologized to two of his exes, Janelle and Christine, Kody saved his most prickly ex-wife for last.
On the December 28 episode, Kody traveled to Utah to make amends with his first wife, Meri Brown. But unlike her former sister wives, Meri wasn’t buying what Kody was attempting to sell.
While Meri was suspicious of his intentions in the first place, Kody lost her when he attacked her friends. Rather than just going straight to the apology, Kody stepped in it when he mentioned “the way your friends talk about me.” And the conversation went downhill from there.
Meri Brown isn’t convinced Kody’s apology is genuine
When her ex seemed to go after her friends, Meri responded that he could “stop right there.” Though Kody assured her that he didn’t want to argue and insisted, “I’m just here to apologize,” he’d touched a nerve.
Unfortunately, Meri was triggered by Kody’s remark and instantly went into defense mode. After years of not being able to speak openly, Meri wasn’t having it.
“This is something Kody’s done the whole time I’ve known him is just try to talk over me or try to stop me from saying something,” she explained in a confessional.
Taking a different tack, Kody said he was sorry for the way he’d treated her over the years. Though he apologized for everything from saying he’d never loved her to not finding her funny, Meri’s bullsh*t detector had already been activated.
“Hey, you got to stop with the apologize word,” she interjected. “The more you use it, the more it feels insincere. [This] doesn’t feel like … a sincere conversation.”
Eventually realizing that Kody was apologizing for his own peace of mind rather than for her, Meri told producers, “It’s for sure just all about him, which is fine. If he needs this, he can have it.”
In the end, Kody didn’t accomplish what he meant to with Meri. After being ignored and dismissed for so many years, Meri came in with walls up and walked away unimpressed.
