The countdown is on! Netflix is just days away from launching its next big thing: Star Search.
A reboot of the iconic series that dominated the ’80s and’ 90s, Star Search is back with a fresh format, major celebrities, and a new generation of performers looking for their big break. Check out the trailer below, and get ready to discover a new superstar.
Star Search will be a five-week live event streaming on Netflix
After decades off the air, Netflix is reviving Star Search and placing a huge bet on its success. Throughout the five-week event series, fans will witness performances from comedians, dancers, musicians, magicians, and more. In the trailer, host Anthony Anderson called it the “greatest talent competition ever.” That’s a pretty high bar.
The trailer also gave us a first look at the panel of celebrity judges. Netflix tapped Chrissy Teigen, Jelly Roll, and Sarah Michelle Gellar for the panel. The trio will oversee the weekly tournament, offering feedback and support to the performers.
Although the judges will preside over the competition, the fate of the performers actually rests in the viewers’ hands. Episodes will air live on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and you’ll be able to cast votes in real-time. It all leads up to an epic live finale.
“The most important judge is you,” Chrissy teased in the trailer.
Netflix is really banking on the audience to participate in the real-time voting system. Voting will only be open for a limited-window, so this is the one instance where a binge-watch isn’t okay. They need people tuned in live, casting votes like the old days of American Idol. We’ll see how it all shakes out.
“A superstar cannot be crowned without you,” Anthony added. “Whose star will rise? You help decide!”
Star Search premieres live on Netflix on January 20.
