The world saw Lady Gaga win a Grammy in this year’s “Best Pop Vocal Album” for “Mayhem,” but Miley Cyrus’ reaction sparked debate of a potential snub. When Gaga’s name was called, cameras caught Cyrus staying seated while much of the room stood, bursting into a standing ovation.
While Cyrus did clap after Gaga’s speech, the brief pause still set off a wave of online chatter about whether she was sending a message or simply disappointed for not getting the honor.
Miley Cyrus has ‘never been close’ with Lady Gaga amid Grammys snub, per source
Rob Shuter’s #NaughtyButNice on Substack reported that the story behind Lady Gaga’s Grammy win and Miley Cyrus’ snub started long before Sunday night.
As such, insiders saw the moment as a glimpse into a relationship between people who were never close, with an industry source claiming, “This isn’t new.” They added, “It’s been there for a very long time — people are just finally noticing it.”
Another source described the dynamic, claiming, “They’ve never been close.” They added, “There was never warmth, never sisterhood. Just polite distance that slowly hardened.”
Additionally, insiders noted that Gaga publicly defended Cyrus after the singer’s headline-making 2013 VMAs performance, urging critics to “lighten up” and “leave her alone.” One of them claimed, “That support wasn’t forgotten. But it also wasn’t embraced.”
The reason, a confidant explained, was allegedly that “Miley hates feeling positioned as someone who was ‘protected.’” The insider added, “She wants to be seen as equal — or untouchable.” Another source suggested, “They occupy the same universe.” However, reportedly, “they don’t share the same values.”
And as for the Grammys moment between Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga, an insider insisted people read it correctly. However, they called it something other than a jab. The source claimed, “That moment wasn’t shade,” and that “it was confirmation.”
Insiders claimed that the moment only showed what has been true for years. Cyrus and Gaga may share the same stage, but they reportedly don’t share a bond.
