Bijou Phillips is back in the hospital as new complications linked to her kidney transplant send her into another round of treatment. She received a donor kidney in 2017, but her health has shifted again, requiring doctors to place her back on dialysis.
People close to her say she is awake and aware of what’s happening, though her condition remains serious as doctors work to stabilize her. She now faces the need for another kidney transplant.
Bijou Phillips needs another kidney transplant
A source told Us Weekly that Bijou restarted dialysis on February 10 after her remaining kidney showed signs of decline. The insider noted she has continued to face kidney-related complications since her transplant. Friends and relatives reportedly went through testing in hopes of donating, but none proved to be compatible matches.
Even so, her circle believes a living donor could be found in the coming months. She has received steady support from sisters Chyna and Mackenzie Phillips, along with longtime friends Nicky and Paris Hilton.
Bijou shared her situation publicly on Instagram, writing, “I’m asking as a friend, a sister, an aunt, and, most importantly, a single mother to an incredible and brave daughter. I am in need of a kidney.” She added that she was “born with underdeveloped kidneys and spent the first three months of life in the NICU on dialysis.”
Her previous transplant bought valuable time, but complications followed. “That transplant gave me 8 precious years to be a mother to my daughter — but I have had many complications since, including the BK virus which led to both a cellular and antibody rejection,” she shared. “I am currently under care of Dr Anjay Rastogi at UCLA and back on dialysis.”
The BK virus can reactivate when transplant medications suppress the immune system, sometimes harming the donated organ. Bijou ended her message with urgency: “Please help me find a living donor so that I can have more time with my daughter, family, and friends. Time is of the essence.”
