Reverend Jesse Jackson was a major figure who spoke up for oppressed, voiceless, and overlooked people around the globe. The Baptist minister was a protégé of Martin Luther King Jr.
Throughout his career, he advocated for numerous causes while founding the Rainbow PUSH Coalition. That group vouches for social justice, civil rights, and political activism. Jesse was part of many historical human rights movements while championing equality. He had previously been touted as a potential successor to MLK Jr. years ago. Jesse was 84.
The historic Civil Rights leader has died
He’s one of the most well-known civil rights activists from the late 20th and early 21st century. Jesse’s family delivered the sad news of his passing, saying he died peacefully surrounded by family on Tuesday morning.
In an Instagram statement, Jesse’s family says that his “unwavering belief in justice, equality and love uplifted millions.” They called him a servant leader who worked tirelessly for the oppressed. The family says that he left an indelible mark on history.
Among the many history-making moments he was a part of was the Selma to Montgomery marches in Alabama in 1965. Many activists were so impressed by his passion and leadership. So much so that MLK Jr. gave him a role in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC).
On two occasions, he also ran for President in 1984 and 1988. In May of 1983, he became the first African American since Reconstruction to address a joint session of the Alabama Legislature. Jesse inspired many after him to advocate for civil rights. Among them is Al Sharpton, who expressed sorrow over his death. The reverend, who is said to be worth $600,000 as of 2025, says the nation lost one of its greatest voices with Jesse’s death. He calls learning under him among the greatest honors of his life.
His family says his campaign mobilized millions to vote in the 1980s. Jesse leaves behind his wife Jacqueline, six children, and multiple grandchildren.
