The USA men’s hockey team defeated Canada 2-1 in overtime on the final day of the 2026 Olympic Winter Games.
Afterwards, Donald Trump called the men’s team, while offering to have them over at the White House. During the chat, Donald said he would need the women’s team at the White House as well. The President appeared to fear the consequences he might face if the women didn’t get invited to Washington, D.C. The American women’s team won gold, defeating Canada in the final themselves.
Team USA’s men’s hockey team took Winter Olympics gold
It seems like many people didn’t appreciate the President’s humor regarding the women’s hockey team. In the phone call to the men’s team, Donald is heard saying, “I must tell you, we’re going to have to bring the women’s team. You do know that.” He went on to say that if that didn’t happen, “I do believe I’d probably would be impeached.”
Many users on X expressed their disgust at the President’s remark. The US men’s team had just captured the gold medal. It was the first for them since the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid. The gold medal game on Sunday marked the 46th anniversary of the famous Miracle on Ice game at the Winter Olympics. On that occasion the US defeated the Soviet Union in men’s hockey, considered one of the biggest upsets in sports history.
US Vice President JD Vance had issued a warning to American athletes competing in the Olympics. He asked for them to bring the country together rather than offer political messages in criticism of Trump.
The American women have won three gold medals since the sport was first introduced at the Olympics in 1998. Traditionally, teams that win a championship are invited to the White House to celebrate the occasion. There have, however, been plenty of players who have skipped the occasion.
