An iconic women’s football star is calling out the American men’s hockey team. Among other things, Megan Rapinoe took exception to how players reacted to President Donald Trump’s congratulatory phone call. This came after the team had defeated Canada to win the gold medal.
On her latest podcast, the two-time Women’s World Cup champion says that the men’s hockey team were “co-opted by a clown.” The President took heat for his call, in which he said that he would have them over to the White House. He said the women’s team would have to get an invite as well or he’d face impeachment, drawing laughter from many of the men. Megan knows what it’s like to experience Olympic glory, capturing the 2012 gold medal with the US women at the London Summer Games.

The US men’s hockey team let the President reign on their parade. That’s according to Megan, who believes they allowed Donald to take the spotlight from them. On her podcast, A Touch More, alongside Sue Bird, Megan asked the men’s hockey team a question. “Why don’t you respect yourself more than to have that moment be taken by someone?”
At his State of the Union address this week, Donald said that the women’s hockey team would get an invite to the White House. On Thursday, however, Olympic women’s hockey MVP Caroline Harvey said that she likely wouldn’t attend. She added that she wasn’t aware of one, stating that she was busy with school.
Megan has often spoken out against the President before. She helped the US capture the Women’s World Cup in 2019. Afterwards she famously said, “I’m not going to the f*cking White House.” Megan won the Golden Boot for top goalscorer at the 2019 Women’s World Cup in France.
Donald’s predecessor in the White House, Joe Biden, awarded Megan the Presidential Medal of Freedom in July 2022.
