Jeff Bezos’ new wife, Lauren Sanchez, recently appeared on the Today show to promote her new children’s book. She spoke with host Craig Melvin to talk about The Fly Who Flew Under The Sea book and became emotional.
Lauren spoke about her childhood and children, holding back tears. She appeared on the show in New York City on Tuesday, March 3.
Why Lauren Sanchez got emotional on the Today show

The Today show interview pivoted from the book to Lauren discovering she had dyslexia when she was 19 years old. She was visibly emotional, talking about hiding her learning disability rather than confronting it.
Lauren gives credit to Lori, a community college teacher, who recognized what she was going through. She encouraged the former journalist to get tested for dyslexia. She told Lauren, “You’re not dumb, she just can’t spell.”
This propelled Lauren to look at academics and her relationship with learning differently. During the interview, it was evident that her childhood was marred by insecurities.
Lauren held back tears discussing a touching memory during her wedding to Jeff in June 2025. The couple’s children spoke at the Venice celebration. Specifically, Lauren’s son, Evan Whitesell, who has dyslexia, related his struggles with the learning disability. In his speech about fourth grade spelling issues, Evan recalled telling himself, “I can do it.”
Lauren described her son’s experience as the “most meaningful and impactful” part of her wedding, aside from the actual nuptials. It meant so much to her, that she put up a “I can do it” sign at her house as a sign of resilience.
She spoke about soon becoming an empty nester as daughter, Ella Whitesell, goes off to college.
She emphasized the importance of parents reading to their children, saying that even 10 minutes a day can make a big difference. When reading “you release what is called Oxytocin and your child releases it … it’s so important,” she said.
