Ring Doorbell Founder Faces Backlash After Cold Nancy Guthrie Comments

The founder of doorbell-camera company Ring has come under fire over “insensitive” comments he made about Nancy Guthrie. The mother of Today co-host Savannah Guthrie has been missing for over a month. So far, investigations have failed to make any headway in finding her.

Speaking to Fortune, Ring founder Jamie Siminoff commented on the alleged kidnapping of Nancy. She was reported missing on February 1.

“I do believe if they had more, if there were more cameras on the house … we might have solved [the case],” he said. “The video that they have appears to be the best evidence they have of what happened,” Jamie added of the Google Nest video from outside Nancy’s home.

Although footage of the alleged kidnapper was caught on the camera, Nancy did not have a Nest subscription, so it was not recorded. As a result, it took technicians more than a week to recover the clip, putting a delay in the police investigation.

“The Nancy Guthrie thing has shown just how important video and more video would be in a case like this,” Jamie added. “I think it’s been clear. But I think this is just another example of, like, how important it is to have video at your house.”

“What a jerk-off statement,” someone said on Reddit in response to the entrepreneur’s comments. “He’s trying to sell his products [by] giving a statement as such. Gross,” said another person.

Since Nancy went missing, several ransom notes have been recieved and her family has offered a reward of $1 million. Taking to social media recently, daughter Savannah spoke of the family’s “hope” that she will be brought home.
