Six months into the investigation of Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department made a bold move. They released two alleged ransom notes, the first of which was addressed to Nancy’s daughter, Today Show host Savannah Guthrie. Unfortunately, this decision seems to indicate that the investigation has run out of leads. And for the Guthrie family, it may be too little, too late.
The Nancy Guthrie ransom notes should have been released sooner
According to PEOPLE, the first note, which was released on July 31, stated, “We have your mother Nancy. She is safe but scared.” It went on to detail a ransom demand. However, the second note, addressed to the Guthrie family, indicated that Nancy had passed away.
“She perished shortly after she was taken,” the sender wrote, adding, “She is buried in nature now. We are truly sorry.”
Lead Sheriff Chris Nanos shared via a video on X. “Investigators felt like there’s a number of pieces of information in these notes that it just might jog someone to say, ‘I’ve heard that,’ or [recognize] the wording, the style of the writing. So we hope that by releasing the actual note we’ll get some response from the community,” he explained.
Of course, there has been some controversy about the timing of the ransom note’s release. Dan Brunner, a retired FBI agent, told NBC 10, “You’re now having one story coming out, multiple sources coming out of the FBI saying that these notes were fake, but yet, Pima County, the sheriff’s department is putting out that these notes are to generate leads.”
Meanwhile, Savannah has issued a plea via Instagram for the location of her mother’s remains. “We are begging for help. We are desperate,” Savannah wrote in the caption. “Someone recognizes the writing in the ransom demand notes.”
While I am not an expert in this field, it seems that if the ransom notes had been released earlier, it could have resulted in more active leads. While it may not have saved Nancy’s life, it may have allowed her grief-stricken family to bring her home. The Guthrie family and Nancy deserve justice and peace.
