Prince William Shares Never-Before-Seen Photo of Princess Diana

On Mother’s Day in the U.K., Prince William marked the occasion with a salute to his late mother. The heir to the British throne shared a personal photo from his childhood.

Princess Diana died in a Paris car crash on August 31, 1997. The photo he shared of him with his mom was from 1984.

The Prince of Wales’ Instagram post showed him at age 2 and Diana holding hands in a field of flowers at Highgrove. He wrote, “Remembering my mother, today and every day. Thinking of all those who are remembering someone they love today. Happy Mother’s Day. W.”

His father, King Charles, and his wife Queen Camilla also posted for Mother’s Day on Instagram. The photos included one of Queen Elizabeth II and Camilla alongside her late mother Rosalind Shand. “Wishing Mothers everywhere, and those who might be missing their Mums today, a restful Mothering Sunday,” he wrote.

Although Princess Kate did not post for Mother’s Day, she has spoken about the importance of the role. She and William have three children.

This was a year after a photo taken by William showed her with the couple’s three children. There was controversy at that time that this was altered via Photoshopped. Kate responded on social media, “Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing. I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused. I hope everyone celebrating had a very happy Mother’s Day.”

It was soon after that 2024 post that Kate announced she was receiving cancer treatment and would not be appearing in public. She announced the end of her chemotherapy in January 2025, saying she was in remission.
