Liza Minnelli Faces Backlash for Using AI on ‘Soulless’ Song

Liza Minnelli is reportedly working on a project that pairs her speaking voice with AI-generated music.

Details of the project are currently under wraps, but the legend recently released a new memoir, titled Kids, Wait Till You Hear This!. Additionally, AI company ElevenLabs is apparently in control of the new endeavor. Liza and her sister, Lorna Luft, have also reportedly given the company the rights to the voice of their late mother, Judy Garland.

Sources, apparently close to the EGOT-winning star’s inner circle, told Radar Online that they’re ‘increasingly worried she’s being steered into projects that benefit others more than her.” They fear this AI music “isn’t about artistic experimentation.” Rather, it’s an attempt at “monetizing her legacy while she’s still alive to rubber-stamp it.”

“Who is advising her to do this?” a source told the outlet. “Because it’s clearly not people who are protecting her legacy. This is so far beneath her.”

The sources went on to highlight Liza’s “longtime friend and handler,” Michael Feinstein. Michael is an investor at ElevenLabs. Additionally, his own work is said to appear on her upcoming album. The anonymous people say Liza’s inner circle “don’t trust him.” However, “they do acknowledge one uncomfortable truth – [Liza] listens to him.”

It is worrying that such a unique and legendary voice would subject herself to AI dribble. Moreover, her voice and her mother’s being replicated by AI could mean that their legacy and history could be misunderstood and manipulated for future generations. Judy passed away at the age of 47 in 1969, but AI could make the late star act in projects posthumously without her consent.

However, a friend of Michael’s told Radar the allegations are false. “Michael wasn’t involved at all in Liza’s project, zero,” the source said. “The only connection is that they are both investors in the company, ElevenLabs.”
