The actor praised Tom Cruise for revitalizing the film industry

He’s often saving the world on screen, but apparently, our gratitude for Tom should extend beyond that. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kurt says that he told Tom in a letter why Top Gun: Maverick was such a big deal for Hollywood. “I thought that this was the type of movie that we needed to try and get the movie business back on track,” said Kurt. The film came out in 2022, just as many industries, including theirs was struggling to get out of the COVID pandemic.
Kurt believes that COVID altered audiences’ movie habits. Many for him were staying home watching movies rather than going to theatres. The Top Gun sequel follows the character Pete Maverick Mitchell, training a new crop of Navy pilots.
Audiences flocked to see Top Gun: Maverick, which raked in close to $1.5 billion at the box office. It’s the 15th highest-grossing film ever and the second highest in 2022 behind Avatar: The Way of Water. It also earned six Academy Award nominations, winning for Best Sound in 2023. An untitled third Top Gun movie is currently in the works.
