Uma Thurman Reveals Glenn Close’s Blunt Advice

Uma Thurman has revealed to Drew Barrymore the unforgettable, although harsh, advice she got from an acting legend at the start of her career.

The advice came from Glenn Close, the eight-time Academy Award nominee, as well as three Tony award and Emmy award wins. The two women worked together on the 1988 film Dangerous Liaisons, which earned Glenn her fifth Oscar nomination. In the presence of such brilliance, Uma was surprised at the unorthodox, yet helpful, support she got from her.

Speaking on The Drew Barrymore Show, Uma revealed that she was overwhelmed during this early role in her career. She confessed to the host that she felt like a “bad actress” among “consummate” thespians in the now-cult classic film. In addition to Glenn, Uma co-starred in the romantic drama with John Malkovich and Michelle Pfeiffer.

The Kill Bill star remembered trying to “create emotion” in her preparation for the role and “to work through my shame” regarding her insecurities. “I know I’m not good at this and I’m trying so hard,” Uma recalled thinking.

Then, she turned to her accomplished co-star for advice. The piece of wisdom she got from her elder seemed contradictory for someone so accomplished. However, the up-and-coming actress understood exactly what she meant.

She recalled that Glenn “looked at me in her beautiful outfit and she said, ‘Try less hard.’” Uma also nailed an impression of the star during her recollection of the conversation.

“And I was like, ‘She’s telling me the truth.’” she concluded.

Evidently, this turned out to be good advice after all. In 1995, Uma received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Mia Wallace in Pulp Fiction. Later, she won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress for her role in the miniseries Hysterical Blindness.
