Pope Leo Seemingly Called Out Donald Trump Before Ceasefire Deal

Pope Leo appears to have slammed President Donald Trump over his recent controversial threat against Iran, shortly before announcing a ceasefire deal. The pontiff’s remark comes amid Trump’s significant update on de-escalating the conflict.

Hours ahead of announcing the U.S.-Iran ceasefire deal, Donald Trump made a controversial Truth Social post, threatening to wipe out a “whole civilization” in Iran. The post sparked widespread backlash, including a strong statement from Pope Leo XIV, who condemned the statement.

Speaking with reporters outside his Castel Gandolfo residence in Italy, Pope Leo stated, “Today, as we all know, there has also been this threat against the entire people of Iran, and this is truly unacceptable.” He added, “There are certainly issues of international law here, but even more so a moral issue for the good of the whole entire population” (via Fox News).

Although the pope did not address Trump directly, he appeared to be alluding to the president’s Truth Social post from April 7. “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will,” the POTUS wrote. “However, now that we have Complete and Total Regime Change, where different, smarter, and less radicalized minds prevail, maybe something revolutionarily wonderful can happen, WHO KNOWS?”

A few hours after making this controversial threat, Trump announced on April 8 that he has agreed t to “suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks” on the condition that Iran agrees to “the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz.”

Trump added, “This will be a double sided CEASEFIRE! The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East. We received a 10 point proposal from Iran, and believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate.”
