As the Harry Potter franchise prepares to revisit the wizarding world in a new TV series, fans are eagerly speculating about who could take on the iconic role of Voldemort, aka the Dark Lord. However, Ralph Fiennes, the actor who brought the legendary villain to life in the original film series, has picked his top contender to play Voldemort in the upcoming TV show.
Harry Potter star Ralph Fiennes on who could be his successor as Voldemort
With the wizarding world getting ready to cast a new Voldemort, Harry Potter’s own Ralph Fiennes has weighed in on who could possibly follow in his footsteps. The actor has shared his thoughts on his ideal successor for HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series in an interview this week. “Well, I remember being asked the question once we’d shot the total film series ‘would I reprise the part?’ and this was some years ago,” Fiennes shared on Friday’s episode of The Claudia Winkleman Show.
At that time, the Red Dragon actor had expressed enthusiasm about returning to the wizarding world. However, despite his willingness to reprise the role of Voldemort, there were no efforts to bring him back. “But then nothing’s happened,” he added. “I think that ship has sailed.”
However, Fiennes is excited about the prospect of a former costar taking on the Dark Lord’s mantle. He is particularly fond of Tilda Swinton as a potential candidate, saying she would be amazing in the role. The acclaimed actress has a proven track record of playing powerful, otherworldly characters. Her credits include the White Witch in The Chronicles of Narnia, the Ancient One in Doctor Strange, and supernatural roles in films like Suspiria and Only Lovers Left Alive.
While the Harry Potter series hasn’t announced its Voldemort pick yet, one actor Potterheads can rule out is Cillian Murphy. He shut down rumors of playing the ruthless wizard, asking The Times to even make it headline news.
HBO is launching the Harry Potter series at the end of 2026.
