Studios and theatre owners got a new look at Alejandro G. Iñárritu‘s Digger at CinemaCon, which features Tom Cruise as an old man, deviating sharply from his appearances in other recent films. The 63-year-old has been one of the most endearing actors over the past decades, but for the first time, fans will see him in a role he has never played in a film so far. Unsurprisingly, many have reacted with wonder to the description.
Tom Cruise debuts new look in Digger footage
The Mission: Impossible star showcased a new look in the footage from Alejandro G. Iñárritu‘s upcoming film, which was screened at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. Both were in attendance as the footage was screened to studios and theatre owners.
Tom Cruise appeared as an old man with grey hair, wrinkles, and a gut in the footage from Digger, a major contrast from his usual look in other films. He reportedly sported grey hair, a gut, and wrinkles (via The Hollywood Reporter).
Iñárritu reportedly had the idea of the film nine years ago and has been talking to Cruise for seven. “Watching Tom Cruise becoming Digger Rockwell, I was not prepared for that,” he said. The Academy Award-winner added that he knew Cruise was fearless for his stunts in most of his films, but “embodying this character, this is another kind of fearless… this role could be his most challenging, hire-wire act.”
The Top Gun actor also returned the favor by saying that Digger was “the kind of movie” for which he “wanted to make movies.” He added, “The movie is wild, it’s funny, and I can’t wait for you all to see it.”
Meanwhile, many fans reacted to Tom Cruise’s character in Digger. “Man’s never afraid to transform for a role. A satirical black comedy about an elderly CEO who wrecks the world and has to clean up his own mess? I’m in, especially with Iñárritu directing,” one user wrote on X (formerly Twitter). Another user wrote, “Tom Cruise never stops pushing limits [fire emoji].”
Slated to release in October 2026, this new look of Tom Cruise will become the talk of the town when Digger finally debuts. The film also stars Sandra Huller, Jesse Plemons, Riz Ahmed, Michael Stuhlbarg, Sophie Wilde, and Emma D’Arcy, among others.
Notably, Alejandro G. Iñárritu previously said that Digger is a “comedy of catastrophic proportions.”
