Donald Trump Calls McDonald’s DoorDash Stunt ‘Tacky’

Donald Trump recently addressed the DoorDash PR stunt at the White House during a roundtable in Las Vegas. He admitted that the stunt, done to promote his “no tax on tips,” was “a little tacky.” The stunt he’s referring to featured Sharon Simmons, sporting a “DoorDash Grandma” t-shirt, visiting the White House to deliver a McDonald’s order, and meeting with tricky questions from the president.

During a roundtable, Donald Trump spoke about the promotion of the “no tax on tips” policy through a DoorDash PR stunt. He shared his thoughts on his interaction with Sharon Simmons, who had earlier spoken before the Republican-led committee in Nevada in support of the same policy. “It was a little bit of a, you know, I mean to be honest, it was a little tacky,” he said.

Sharing on how politics makes leaders do such things, he added, “When we do these things in politics, they’re a little embarrassing, but we do them.” The stunt in question featured Simmons, who delivers the McDonald’s order at the White House and is greeted by the president.

He gives her a tip before asking her take on the transgender athletes in sports. Simmons doesn’t answer the question, which leads him to give another shot, asking if she voted for him. Her answer was “maybe.” The White House posted this stunt on social media to promote this policy. It also revealed that Simmons saved “$11,000” because of it.

The stunt received massive backlash, with public affairs head Julian Crowley having to explain the staged scene and that the interaction between Simmons and Trump was genuine. He said on X (formerly Twitter), “No one is claiming it was a real delivery. It was clearly and obviously a planned event to mark a new policy starting. To claim Sharon is a prop, plant or an actor is totally wrong and off base. She is a Dasher and she participated to support the policy that benefits her.”
