Donald Trump has weighed in on one of the most consequential geopolitical flashpoints currently gripping global energy markets. The U.S. president addressed a key development in the ongoing conflict, clarifying exactly what it would take for the situation to change.
Donald Trump comments on Strait of Hormuz
President Donald Trump has declared the U.S. will not lift its blockade on Iranian ports until Washington reaches a deal with Tehran. Trump wrote on Truth Social that the blockade was “absolutely destroying Iran” and that the U.S. was winning the conflict “by a lot.” His comments come as a temporary U.S. -Iran ceasefire is set to expire on Wednesday.
Since the blockade began one week ago, U.S. forces have directed 27 vessels to turn around or return to Iranian ports. The U.S. also intercepted and seized an Iranian-flagged cargo ship on Sunday after it attempted to breach the blockade. Iran called the seizure an “act of piracy” and a violation of the ceasefire (via BBC).
Iran has maintained its own blockade on the Strait of Hormuz for nearly two months, sending global energy prices soaring. The strait briefly reopened on Saturday but closed again quickly after reports emerged of vessels being targeted. Iran stated it would keep the route shut until the U.S. lifted its port blockade.
Uncertainty surrounds a second round of peace talks between the U.S. and Iran, despite Islamabad’s preparation to host. U.S. Vice President JD Vance has not yet departed Washington, while Iran confirmed it has “no plans” to attend. However, hotel management at Islamabad’s Serena Hotel asked guests to leave in preparation for the expected meetings.
BBC Chief International Correspondent Lyse Doucet, reporting from Tehran, noted the situation remained unpredictable. She said, “If JD Vance is going to be in Islamabad, it will be really hard for the Iranians to not show up.” A senior Pakistani government official told Reuters that Pakistan was confident it could get Iran to attend the talks.
