Donald Trump Gives Major Update on Iran Ceasefire

Donald Trump provided a significant update on the U.S. ceasefire with Iran as tensions between both nations continue to shape global headlines. The president addressed the status of ongoing peace talks and outlined his conditions for the conflict’s next chapter.

Donald Trump announces Iran ceasefire extension

President Donald Trump extended the U.S. ceasefire with Iran on Tuesday, CNBC reported. Trump cited Tehran’s “seriously fractured” government as the reason for the extension. The ceasefire was previously set to expire on Wednesday.

Trump stated the ceasefire would continue “until such time as” Iran’s leaders submit a “unified proposal.” The proposal must address ending the war with both the U.S. and Israel. Trump directed the military to continue its blockade of Iranian ports during the extension. He also ordered forces to “remain ready and able” in all other respects.

The extension followed reports that Vice President JD Vance’s planned trip to Pakistan had stalled. Vance was set to attend a second round of peace talks with Iranian officials. Iranian state news outlet Tasnim reported that Tehran’s negotiators refused to attend further talks. Tasnim stated Iran called the negotiations “a waste of time because the US prevents reaching any suitable agreement.”

An advisor to Iranian parliamentary speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf challenged Trump’s motives directly. The advisor called the ceasefire extension “a ploy to buy time” for a surprise strike. The advisor also stated the continued naval blockade was “no different from bombardment.” He added the blockade “must be met with a military response.”

Trump credited Pakistan’s leaders for requesting the extension in his official statement. He referenced “Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, of Pakistan” by name. Earlier Tuesday, Trump told CNBC’s “Squawk Box” he did not want to extend the ceasefire.

Iranian officials have accused the U.S. of breaching commitments under a 10-point framework. Iran offered the framework at the start of the fragile ceasefire. The Strait of Hormuz remains a key point of conflict between the two nations.
