RFK Jr. criticized for leaving Cheryl Hines unprotected during shooting incident
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his wife, Cheryl Hines, were among the numerous attendees present during the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Sunday. A video of the Health and Human Services Secretary being escorted away to safety during the incident is now going viral online. Many netizens claim that he failed to ensure his wife’s safety.
The viral clip shows a team of security personnel surrounding RFK Jr. as they whisk him away amid the chaos, while Hines follows close behind. Reacting to the video, several claimed that the HHS Secretary left Hines unprotected.
One user commented, “It’s so funny how he didn’t even look back for one second.” While another said, “He could have protected her, not left her behind and walk.” A third user wrote, “Wow they really left Cheryl behind.”
Amid the backlash, some netizens have come to the defense of Kennedy, with one person saying, “He is a security target and is being extracted. Being near him is the most dangerous position for her.” Another user stated, “Either she has her own detail, and they instruct and protect her, or her safe place is under the table with everyone else.”
Shortly after the ordeal, Cheryl Hines took to her Instagram Stories to detail her terrifying experience. “Okay so I just got back from the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. That was a crazy moment in time,” she wrote.
“So we were there, and we heard shots, everybody got under the tables, nobody knew what was going on, and then Bobby’s security detail surrounded us, and took us, had to lift me over chairs, because I’m in heels, and a gown. They took us through all of the back ways, and we got in the car and left,” she added.
Law enforcement has identified the shooter as Cole Tomas Allen. Authorities arrested Allen outside the banquet hall at the Washington Hilton hotel, where the Correspondents’ Dinner took place.
