Time has not healed the wounds, as Prince Harry and Prince William’s estrangement continues. Royal author Tom Bower is saying this could impact King Charles’ attendance at the Invictus Games next year.
The once close brothers have been at odds for the past six years. It began when Prince Harry took a step back from his royal duties and moved his family to Montecito, Calif.
King Charles and Prince Harry have a chance to reunite at the Invictus Games

According to the Royal Observer, Tom claims William may prevent Charles from attending the Invictus Games. This would prevent more controversy involving Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle. It will also help protect the Firm’s image.
On a recent episode of Daily Expresso, The Daily Express’ podcast, Tom spoke with host JJ Anisiobi about his thoughts on the topic. JJ asked, “So you don’t think there’s a chance that King Charles will just pop in for five minutes, say hello, smile for the cameras, shake his son’s hand, and then jump back in the Rolls-Royce?” Tom responded, “Not least because of what we’ve discussed, but also because I think William will forbid it.”
Tom noted William’s attitude toward his brother and his goal in creating a modernized monarchy. “I think William’s role in all this is pretty critical, and he wants to have a smooth transition,” Tom said. “He wants to change the monarchy … He needs to appeal to young people and all the other things.”
The author emphasized that William “doesn’t want to be involved in more controversy, especially to benefit Harry and Meghan.” If the King made an Invictus Game appearance, it would highlight the royal family’s tensions.
This point has also been broached by royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams. “This invitation to King Charles to open the Invictus Games in Birmingham is Harry’s trump card,” he told the Daily Express. “The Windsors have a strong sense of duty, and therefore one would expect him [Charles], whatever feelings he has about the difficulties that the Sussexes have wrought for the royal family, to accept.”
