Donald Trump’s alleged use of the Department of Justice (DOJ) is getting some backlash. His predecessor, Barack Obama, is questioning the real estate mogul’s practices among other things.
The former President seems to suggest that the current POTUS is influencing the Attorney General to target some of his critics. Barack doesn’t believe that’s a proper way to govern. The two-term Democratic President also appeared to suggest that his White House successor was giving preferential treatment to his close friends.

Even with the power of being President, there are some lines Barack would not cross. On The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the 44th President said that the White House shouldn’t be directing the Attorney General to “go around prosecuting whoever the President wants prosecuted.” Barack adds that one shouldn’t use their power to “go after their political enemies. Or reward their friend.”
It appears that, in part, Barack was referring to James Comey with those words. The former FBI Director surrendered to police last month after allegedly threatening Trump’s life. James previously investigated Trump in 2017 after allegations of Russian meddling in the 2016 Presidential election.
Barack had a lot to say about how the Justice Department is being run, declaring he’d do things much differently if he were in power. He hopes that in the future, “some sense of the Justice Department being independent.” The US can survive a lot of things in his eyes, but not the “politicization of the justice system.”
At the end of his chat, Stephen joked that since his show is ending soon, he should run for President. Last summer, it was revealed that The Late Show would end for financial reasons. President Trump expressed his delight upon learning this online. Stephen’s show officially ends on May 21.
