Cate Blanchett’s Sheer Maison Margiela Dress Is Basically a Micro Minidress

For her latest public appearance on May 6, Cate Blanchett stepped out in a sheer Maison Margiela dress, which doubled as a micro minidress. The Academy Award winner honored Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro at the BFI Fellowship celebration in London. The duo has worked together on 2021’s “Nightmare Alley” and 2022’s “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.”

At the BFI Fellowship celebration 2026, Cate Blanchett opted for a look from Maison Margiela’s Fall/Winter 2026 Ready-to-Wear collection. Designed by Glenn Martens, the presentation hit the runway in April 2026. The sheer outfit, which doubled as a micro minidress, featured a structured, longline blazer-style tunic. It had a U-shaped cutout at the chest filled with a delicate, sheer black pleated chiffon. A vertical row of tiny silk buttons ran down the center of the sheer panel.

Meanwhile, dense, scalloped lace ruffles adorned the cutout’s edges, adding a Victorian, gothic romanticism to the sharp shoulders. The cuffs gave way to wide, sheer organza extensions that veiled her hands. Voluminous, wide-leg sheer black overlays comprised the lower half of the outfit. The transparent layers created a ghostly, fluid movement that contrasted with the rigid, pointed hemline of the top half. The dark outfit could be a subtle nod to Guillermo del Toro’s love for the horror genre.

Elizabeth Stewart, whose client list includes Viola Davis and Amanda Seyfried, styled Blanchett for the event. The “Blue Jasmine” star accessorised with architectural silver earrings and a singular, oversized statement ring with a sculptural animal motif.

She wore her blonde hair in a chic, side-parted bob, maintaining the focus on the high neckline of her dress. Meanwhile, her makeup was soft, featuring black eyeliner, rosy blush, and glossy pink lips. She last appeared at the Olivier Awards in April 2026, where she sported a black cutout dress from Lanvin.
