Veteran talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, who has been very critical of the Trump administration, mocked Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s visit to the Vatican in an attempt to ease the tension between Pope Leo XIV, the first American-born head of the Vatican, and President Donald Trump, who has been very vocal about his criticism of the Pope.
Jimmy Kimmel jokes about Marco Rubio and Pope Leo’s meet
Jimmy Kimmel hit back at Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s visit to meet the Pope at the Vatican. The visit was aimed at reducing the ongoing tension between the current President of the United States, Donald Trump, and Pope Leo XIV, the head of the Vatican.
Rubio visited the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican shortly after Trump’s latest criticism of the Pope. In it, he claimed that the Pope supported Iran owning nuclear weapons. Trump also accused the Pope of “endangering a lot of Catholics.”
The Pope, meanwhile, maintained his earlier stance, which initially sparked his issues with the President. “The mission of the Church is to preach the Gospel, to preach peace. If anyone wants to criticize me for proclaiming the Gospel, let them do so truthfully,” he told reporters in response to Trump’s comments on Wednesday.
Following this, Rubio went to meet the Pope. Kimmel pointed out Rubio’s stiff body language during the Vatican meeting. He also showed a clip in which Rubio awkwardly shook hands with the pontiff and then posed for a picture that appeared equally awkward.
In the photo, the Pope can be seen cracking a small smile, while Rubio appears to maintain a serious expression. “That’s what Marco calls vibing with someone,” Kimmel joked.
The host went on to note that the Pope and Rubio had “the chemistry of parents at their daughter’s wedding two months after the divorce.” The host added, “In an embarrassing mix-up, the pope mistook little Marco for a child and baptized him.” He further noted, “If that’s not a penance face, I’ve never seen a penance face.”
Meanwhile, the war with Iran continues.
