A new Sally Field movie dropped on Netflix last week (PSA: be prepared to cry), but she just revealed something interesting about one of her oldest and most iconic films. If you haven’t guessed, that movie is, of course, Steel Magnolias … and her youngest son thinks his time on set as a baby is “probably why he’s gay.”
Sam Greisman jokes that being on the Steel Magnolias set made him gay
In a new interview with PEOPLE, Sally said filming Steel Magnolias back in 1989 was a “wonderful, wonderful experience.”
“We loved each other, all of us, we just completely adored each other,” she said of the cast, which included other icons of the time: Julia Roberts, Shirley MacLaine, Dolly Parton, Daryl Hannah, and Olympia Dukakis.
“We would go shopping on the weekends — all together!” she continued. “Even Dolly sometimes, we’d go to the market, we’d play games, we’d all get together at somebody’s house.”
But the ladies of the cast weren’t the only ones spending so much time together. Just months before filming, Sally had welcomed her son, Sam Greisman, who ended up on set quite often. He even featured in a wrap party photo.
“It’s all of our tight headshots, and on my chest is my little son Sam,” she explained of the picture. “He was six months old, I’m holding his head because I’m trying to save his ears because it was loud.”
She went on: “He was on the set all the time, and my friends took care of him. Sam has always said that that’s probably why he’s gay.”
As well as her son, Sam (now 38), whom she shares with her ex-husband Alan Greisman, Sally has two other children. With her first husband, Steven Craig, Sally has sons Peter and Eli, now 56 and 53 respectively.
And clearly, Sally’s career was quite the inspiration for her sons. All three have gone on to have careers in Hollywood.
