Shakira Celebrates Victory in High-Profile Tax Trial

Shakira has reportedly secured a significant legal win over the Spanish tax agency after a court ruled that the tax authorities had unjustly pursued the singer for alleged tax fraud.

The reparations for Spain’s tax authority can be massive, as the ruling requires the release of 60 million euros that the tax authority had withheld from the singer, along with interest and legal fees.

Shakira triumphs over years-long tax battle in Spanish court

The ruling was in connection with tax evasion charges against Shakira in 2011 when she was touring on a huge concert, covering and performing 120 concerts across 37 countries. The Spanish Tax Authority alleged that Shakira stayed in Spain for more than 183 days, which made her liable to the country’s taxes.

The court comprehensively dismissed the allegations and claimed that they were “obvious” and “contrary to law.” It also rejected the claims, stating that Shakira used fake company names to hide her money, saying that Shakira’s assets were organized, legal, and based largely outside Spain. It has become clear from the ruling that the singer was specifically targeted by Spanish authorities unscrupulously.

In a statement to TMZ from Shakira’s team, they called the ruling an “ultimate victory,” signaling the end of the high-profile legal battle that lasted eight years.

Shakira’s team added, “There was never any fraud … after more than eight years of enduring brutal public targeting, orchestrated campaigns to destroy my reputation, and sleepless nights that ultimately impacted my health and my family’s well-being, the National High Court has finally set the record straight.”

Shakira has also spoken to the media to say that the eight-year-long trial has affected her family, health, and reputation.

The favourable verdict seems to have not only absolved Shakira from charges but has also restored the reputational damage caused during the long ordeal.
