President Donald Trump has asked the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate a recent error involving mail-in ballots in Maryland, suggesting it may involve fraud. He also questioned what happened to the initial 500,000 ballots before the correct ones were sent out. Meanwhile, Maryland election officials had earlier addressed the issue, explaining that the new ballots were issued because they could not determine which voters received the wrong party’s ballot.
Donald Trump asks DOJ to investigate mail-in ballots
Trump took to Truth Social to share his thoughts on a recent fault by election officials, where wrong-party ballots were sent to the voters. Accusing them of fraud, he added, “In Maryland, they sent out 500,000 Illegal Mail In Ballots, and they got caught! So now, they’re going to send out 500,000 more Mail In Ballots, but nobody knows what’s happening with the first 500,000 they sent. In addition, many of these Ballots went to Democrats, so any Republican running in Maryland doesn’t have a chance!”
Not only did Donald Trump call for an investigation from the Department of Justice, but he also went on to criticize the governor of the state, Wes Moore, for allowing such a mistake to happen. He alleged that Moore wanted to ensure that Democrats win. Trump later revealed that it never made sense to him why Maryland was, by default, a Democratic state, but now he claims to understand why. “I’m sure this has gone on for years. I’m going to ask the Attorney General of the United States, and the DOJ, to bring an immediate investigation into this situation.”
Despite Trump’s accusations, election authorities have clarified on their official website that there is no need to worry about duplicate votes, as only one correct ballot per voter will be counted. Meanwhile, the Maryland elections site stated that “There is no risk of duplicate voting as a result of this issue. Election officials have safeguards in place to ensure that only one ballot can be accepted per voter. Every return envelope/oath has a unique identifier to ensure that a voter can only vote one ballot. SBE has implemented additional safeguards to ensure only the correct ballot is counted for each voter.”
